socialmedian: a global alpha?
As noted in this article today on the next web, one of our key initiatives in socialmedian's alpha has been to cultivate a global appeal and reach.
We believe that part of the potential power and opportunity in a service like this is in reaching and enabling anyone anywhere to get highly personalized news. We're also really big on the whole democratization of information bit. That's actually why we called the company "socialmedian" -- the idea being that with social media, everyone now has access to the same information, no matter where they are in the world. When in comes to social media, we're all increasingly the median.
Accordingly, we've been working early on to build our non-U.S. presence on the site. We don't want this to be yet another website that appeals mostly to people who live within the 50 mile radius of Silicon Valley.
So, how are we doing?
Thus far, the data looks as follows:
We have about 2700 alpha users.
Of our usage the past 30 days, 53% has been from people in the U.S. 47% non U.S.
socialmedian alpha usage April 20 to May 20, 2008 (according to our Google Analytics)
